A Note on Results: Please remember that this finishing technique is an artistic process. The depth of the patina and the shine of the gold will vary significantly depending on the time, patience, and attention to detail you are willing to invest. The more time you spend building up the layers and polishing the wax, the richer and more authentic your final result will be.

A beacon of creativity and history, finished with a weathered patina and gleaming gold.

The Eternal Liberty Torch is my custom-designed contest submission that pays homage to one of the most recognizable symbols of freedom in the world. Modeled with an eye for historical grandeur, this piece captures the elegance of a classical flame encased in detailed metalwork, standing atop a fluted column. It serves as a striking display piece that blends architectural history with modern digital crafting.

Inspiration & Design

This model draws its primary inspiration from a personal visit to the Statue of Liberty museum last year. I was captivated by the original 1886 torch on display—its massive scale, the intricacy of the copper work, and the history embedded in its surface. I wanted to capture that specific feeling of awe in a printable format, focusing on the way the flame rises from the ornate cup and the enduring strength of the column.

Design Features

This model is defined by its Classical Architecture, featuring a fluted handle and an ornate cup that cradles the flame. A key feature is the Removable Circular Base, which is designed to detach easily. This allows you to hold the torch as a prop or attach the base to stand it upright for a stable, permanent display on your shelf or desk.

The Artisan Finish: Painting Process & Materials

The finish featured in the photos is a custom "Aged Patina and Gold" effect achieved through a specific multi-step process.

Materials Used: The base colors were created using the HissiCo 42PCS Acrylic Paint Set to achieve the varied tones of oxidized copper. The metallic accents utilize Rub 'n Buff Gold Tones mixed with Pixiss Wax, and the final high-gloss shine was achieved with Beeswax Finish Wax.

The Application Process: The process began by establishing a base patina. Using the HissiCo acrylics, I mixed greens, blues, and earthy browns to create a verdigris hue, applying it as a base coat to fill every recess. Once dry, I built up depth by layering different mixes of bronze, copper, and darker green tones, creating a realistic, weathered look that mimics decades of exposure to the elements.

For the luxurious gold accents on the cup and flame base, I applied Rub 'n Buff Gold Tones using a Q-tip to control the placement on the raised edges. After letting it set briefly, I buffed it with a soft cloth to bring out the luster. To take the finish to the next level, I applied a small amount of Beeswax Finish Wax over the gold and polished it vigorously. This step creates the mirror-like shine seen in the photos, offering a brilliant contrast against the matte, weathered patina of the handle.

Material & Craftsmanship

The focus of this design is capturing the organic flow of the flame against the rigid, architectural geometry of the torch. Printing vertically is essential for preserving the smooth gradients of the handle and the sharp, flickering tips of the flame. Printed here on the Bambu A1 using PLA+/Pro filament, the result is a solid, high-resolution model that serves as the perfect canvas for complex painting techniques.
