Create the well-known Magnetic Tractor Beam Effect with this 3D-printable fidget gadget. Inspired by various public projects and scientific articles on Tractor Magnets
The effect is created by placing one large magnet in the center and two small magnets on the sides in a specific geometry. Through the correct ratio of magnetic strengths and precise polarization, a stable, visible "pulling effect" is created
🧲 Magnets Needed (total 3 pieces)
- 1× large magnet: Ø 20 mm, Height 4 mm
- 2× small magnets: Ø 6 mm, Height 4 mm
🔄 Important Polarization Rule (crucial!)
For the tractor effect to work reliably:
- The two small magnets: South up
- The large magnet in the 3D printed part: North up
- The large magnet outside (the freely movable one): South up – i.e. same as the small magnets
Only in this way will the characteristic, stable Tractor Beam Effect be created
💡 Hint
Use strong neodymium magnets (N42 or higher)
