Napier's Rods – Learning Aid for Multiplication
Print Profile(2)

Description
These Napier's Rods are based on the historical calculation method of John Napier, which allows children and learners to perform multiplications quickly and visually. This set is ideal for primary and secondary school education, remedial classes, and independent study at home.
The rods feature the typical diagonal fields with the corresponding multiplication results on their surface – perfectly suited for determining products by simple reading.
Design & Print
I have tested the rods in two variants:
Single-color variant (simple print)
- Printed in black
- The raised numbers then highlighted with a white Posca pen
- Very good readability and quick implementation
Two-color variant (optimal readability)
The print template is designed so that the rods can be printed in two colors:
- Rods start white
- From Layer 19, the color changes to black
- This makes the numbers appear in clearly visible black on a white background
- Ideal for students, as contrast and readability are maximized
The model is divided into two print plates, so sets can be printed flexibly as needed.
Use in Teaching
With Napier's Rods, students can:
- Understand multiplications visually and structuredly
- break down large numbers step by step
- find results by reading instead of memorizing
- work independently and exploratively
- develop calculation strategies (e.g., number decomposition, diagonal addition)
The rods promote mathematical understanding, independence, and enjoyment of arithmetic. They are particularly valuable for learners who benefit from visual and haptic material.
