Description
This project is an educational phagocytosis model, specifically designed for Life and Earth Sciences / biology classes in middle school or high school.
Developed with my colleague to facilitate the understanding of innate immunity, this model allows students to manipulate the different steps of the process, making the activity much more concrete and intuitive.
The kit includes:
- a simplified “2D” phagocyte, printed in multiple colors,
- bacteria of different shapes and colors,
- a removable digestive vacuole,
- cellular debris representing the final digestion.
Students can:
- Bring a bacterium close to the phagocyte
- Place it inside during phagocytosis
- Add the digestive vacuole
- Remove and observe the cellular debris
This active manipulation helps to better embed concepts: recognition of foreign cells, ingestion, vacuole formation, digestion, and waste rejection.
Printing is fast, low-cost in filament, and perfect for creating a set of individual kits for groups of students. The model is simple, robust, and designed for classroom use.
If you test this material in your classes, I would be happy to hear your feedback !
