Custom STAR-LORD Helmet – LED Eyes & Awesome Music Ready

Dive into the world of Guardians of the Galaxy with this STAR-LORD inspired helmet, designed from the outset as both an illuminated and sound-emitting decorative object, it is suitable for cosplay. Tested and approved by my 9-year-old son for his birthday

Description :

The model incorporates the iconic features of the STAR-LORD helmet:

  • Large faceted visor with distinct mechanical reliefs
  • Highly detailed front respirator grille, with clean layers and edges
  • Circular eye contours sized to accommodate an internal lighting system of my simple design, easy to make and assemble
  • The back of the helmet is designed to clip perfectly and completes STAR-LORD's iconic design
  • 2 Versions “Child” and “Adult”

Painting :

  • A few well-placed painter's masking tape strips and a few cuts with a scalpel are enough to paint this mask
I advise you to paint it in this order:

1 - Primer coat with spray primer paint (I used the one from Action in France, it really does the job)
2 - Matte black special metal spray paint (Action) over the whole thing with a few cloud sprays while the black paint is still fresh and from a distance to give a slight metallic effect
3 - A few hours of drying later: masking areas that will remain black with tape and cutting with a precision scalpel. You can mask some delicate areas with Blu Tack (Tack)

4 - Silver spray paint (Action)
5 - A few hours later, tape over the silver areas and matte “Gold” spray paint (still Action)
Be careful not to wait too long to remove the tape, risking peeling off the paint, and use “sensitive” masking tape.

LED & audio integration (optional) :

Inside the helmet, I designed dedicated printed parts that allow for:

  • inserting simple small LEDs costing a few cents (Garland for €0.75 at Action) into each eye
  • diffusing homogeneous light through the red grille, like in the movie
  • integrating a small electronic board from an AliExpress Bluetooth speaker like this one equipped with a micro-SD card to play the Awesome Mix playlist from the first movie available HERE in mp3 (you must own the original on CD or cassette to be legal, of course) and I desoldered the USB port to avoid injury (it's useless)
  • I installed a miniature but medium-quality speaker from a broken laptop like this miniature speaker HERE
  • powering everything with a small micro-USB rechargeable lithium battery via the Bluetooth speaker board (the one supplied with the speaker does the job but it is limited for using both music and illuminated eyes simultaneously)

The entire system is fully functional on the presented version: the eyes light up and music starts from the helmet.

A circle to house the tiny LEDs, which are hot glued in place. The excess wire is then folded back inside the circle.

The LED circles once mounted on the grilles are grooved to facilitate anchoring and positioning when gluing with super glue. Note that the grilles must be glued first.

⚡️ The electronic part is intentionally simple and accessible, and will be further improved in future versions (cleaner wiring, USB-C, better battery, higher quality stereo sound, optimized mounting, revised front/back assembly, etc.).

Printing & assembly

  • Helmet designed in two main parts (front / back) to facilitate printing and post-processing
  • Compatible with printing in standard PLA
  • The model lends itself very well to sanding + priming + painting to achieve a worn metal look

(Adjust here according to your needs for layer height, print time, etc. but the print profile is optimized for 0.16mm)

AMS Version in preparation

“Child” version fully configured for multi-color AMS printing. 2 Days 5h and 30' of printing and 434g of filament purged with standard AMS

A multi-color AMS version is under development for those who want to directly print a helmet already colored (dark areas, light parts, eye details, etc.). This premium version will be particularly suitable for H2C owners with the Bambu Lab VORTEK system.

If you like this project and want to see:

  • a v2 with improved electronics
  • more interior details
  • and the AMS color version…
