Parametric Dowel / Rod End Cap (Customizable)

Protect the end of any round dowel or rod with this simple parametric end cap.
The model is fully customizable in MakerWorld: just plug in your dimensions and generate a perfect press-fit cap for your project.

Parameters

• dowel diameter – inner diameter of the cap. Set this to match your dowel.
• end diameter – diameter of the outer “flange” that sits at the end of the dowel.
  • NOTE: if you want the end diameter to be the same as the rest of the cap, set that number to dowel diameter + 4mm
• cap length – height of the cylindrical collar that wraps around the dowel.
  • Short = low-profile cap
  • Longer = more grip / stability
    • if you want a longer cap, experiment first with the dowel diameter to make sure it fits

Tested Sizes (reference)

• 1" (25.4 mm) dowel – Home Depot
  • Works well with 25 mm dowel diameter.
• 5/8" (15.875 mm) dowel – Ace Hardware
  • Works well with 15.8 mm dowel diameter.

In general, if you want a snug press fit, setting the dowel diameter slightly below the real diameter (≈0.2–0.4 mm) usually helps, depending on your printer’s tolerances.

Printing Recommendations

• Orientation: Print flat with the large flange on the build plate.
• Supports: Not needed.
• Layer height: 0.16–0.28 mm (0.2 mm works great).
• Walls / perimeters: 3+
• Infill: 20–30% is plenty.
• Material: PLA is fine for indoor use; PETG/ABS if you expect heat or outdoor conditions.
