Bill of Materials

List other parts
  • IKEA EKET 35x35x35 cm Cabinet x 1: I've used 803.321.14 – the one without a door or other colors will also work
  • 6U Rack Strip x 4: for example Adam Hall 61535B6

Description

This is my interpretation of the 10" IKEA EKET rack. All you need is a 6U rack strip (well, 4 to be exact) — no other tools or hardware required! If you can find a 7U rack strip, even better – but as I couldn't find one, I added a printable 1U strip, which works fine.

I used the Adam Hall 61535B6 Rack Strip which you can get cheaply from Thomann in Germany/Austria (https://www.thomann.at/adam_hall_61535b6.htm).
The printed parts fit into the grooves intended for the back, which prevent the rack from moving back and forth.

In order to be able to print it on smaller printers, I separated the pieces. The connection could be improved; however, it won't move after being installed and doesn't need to withstand much force, so I didn't bother.
Once you have assembled the parts for all four corners (two pieces each), you can simply slide in the rack strips (the printed 1U at the bottom, 6U on top ). Then assemble the cover pieces (if you have a door, use the piece designed for the door so that the pin for the closing mechanism fits) with the smaller connectors and slide them in at the front of the rack strips. You should now have one piece for the right side and one for the left, which you can slide into the EKET and push into the grooves on the back. Done!

Can you explain what hotswap drives you use, and why you have connected 2x Eth. left and right?

they’re dell poweredge r710 trays. I had to add a fan directly above the trays since the temperature was getting higher than I’d like. I’ve moved things around since then, but all the patch cables are for things in my home network like computers, tvs, WiFi APs, etc.

Super cool idea. Has anyone tried the whole thing in a tall version of the Eket cube yet

Do you mean e.g 903.339.38? As soon as I find time, I can possibly adapt the model. I'll make a note of it

Yes exactly 903.339.38 I mean. I plan to use this cabinet for my Homelab base and integrate it into the living room wall. That would be great if you could even plan that out.

Did you come across this by chance? I would be interested in the "tall" variant as well

Is it not supposed to be 35x35x35 as you mentioned in another comment?

Oh yes, I must have misread something. It needs to be the 35cm cube!

I would like to put my Terramaster 4 bay nas into this Eket rack, but am wondering if this will cause temperature issues? any thoughts?

My rack consumes less than 30W so I can't tell. If it gets to warm I'd suggest designing fans for the back for enough airflow.

Really interesting project, thank you! Is it still possible to stack two EKET on top of each other with this rack, or are the holes for the securing mechanism used?

That shouldn't be a problem as you can see in the picture of the back side. The printed parts sit in the groves made for the back wall. I can measure if the metal brackets still fit, if you tell me how much clearance they need.

Which legs did you use that are shown in the pictures? The EKET cabinets I’m seeing online don’t have those on them.

IKEA sells legs in the EKET line, they are just called EKET. Number 804.741.51 are the wooden ones, they also sell them in metal.

Hi, could you please design a version that only requires 6U rails? It's really hard to get these 1U pieces. Thanks!

Hi, sorry, I should probably improve the description. As far as I know, there are only multiples of 2U, so I used 6U rails and printed 1U rails. They are included in the print file. Since they are used at the bottom, they are also stable enough
