Description

I have been wanting a model of the USS Dallas for a long time. I Spent over a month designing this and then finally got around to printing it. There are a few options and I hope I included all the small pieces. I also give a few options for the sail as it's a royal pain in the bottom to get it to print right. I ended up splitting it in 2 and gluing it together so that it would fit onto the sub properly. Honestly, I think it looks pretty awesome. I printed it in Carbon Fiber PLA as it gives the best finish. There's several pieces and labeled sec 1, 2, 3 black and red. Black are the top pieces and red are the bottom pieces. 1 goes in front of 2 and that goes in front of 3. I had a custom label for the front but you can put whatever you want.

The model printed out beautifully. I just had one hiccup printing the black tail section. The part came loose and I had to stop the print. Fortunately, I caught it right away and there was a nice clean top layer. I was able to clone the tail section, cut it at the failed layer, and glue the remaining section on with hardly a noticeable line. I did cut the base way down and remix it a bit to come up with a much simpler base that better suited my shelves. All in all, a VERY nice model!! Now I just need a "Red Oktober" ;-)

I'll take a look. I am in the middle of moving so things are in a bit of a disarray. If I still have the file, it is on my NAS somewhere. If not, I can always pull the gcode off the printer and convert it. Give me a few days if you can and I'll post it up here on Maker World.

Great print. The screw is a little tricky but I was finally able to get a decent one printed. I added a set of dolphins where the plaque was on the original and I think it turned out pretty nice. Definitely one of my favorite prints so far. Thanks from a bubblehead. USS Baton Rouge, SSN-689

Love the build! One of the most detailed sub models I've found. I was wondering if you might split the hull into 6 portions instead of 3? I would like to print it at a larger scale, as the detail of the sail components and the DDO get lost in the current scale, but with the hull sections being roughly 9" long already, there's just no room in my X1 to scale them larger. If the hull was broken into 6 sections, I would have room. If you don't want to take the time to do it, would you be willing to post STEP files here so I could do it myself? Either way, the model is still awesome! I almost feel ready to go out listening for seismic anomalies, or whales humping, or anything but a submarine...

Only had my A1 for just over a week and already in the deep end (pardon the pun) in with this amazing build. Love it, fantastic model, had a few issues with warping but probably my fault being a newbie! Oh, and I didn’t have any red filament so gone with full Matt black, might paint it at a later date.

I used toothpicks that I cut. If you try to print something it'll break too easily.

perfect - TU....which leads to my next question: I've broken the antennas twice now - the masts are fine. I was thinking infill might affect this but would only want to change infill for the antenna layers - if that is possible and assuming there is an infill for such small diameter layers...thoughts?

Yeah, I broke mine several times. They're super fragile. I ended up printing the Antenna masts but used metal rods I purchased and painted from Amazon for the scopes. I know, not ideal, but they're very delicate. I actually did get 1 print with all 4 perfect, then I bumped it against a door and they broke. These are what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09W5ZDQZP?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&;th=1

Such a cute print. Scaled it down to 1/600 to make it fit my Typhoon, and it just works awesome.

I had orders to Dallas, then they were changed to the Houston, lol then emergency change to the City of Corpus Christi SSN 705. What are the chances of three Texas boats? FTG1

I'm not sure I know what you're referring to when you say plaque holder. Can you clarify.

the little frame around the brass plate, I was just wondering if you had the file for that specifically

I just added a print profile for just the frame. If you have the metal plate it'll slip right into the frame. I never realized it wasn't in the original 3mf, thanks.

Served on the SSN-750 (among others). This is a great addition to my "I love Me" wall and table ;) Printed well but had some challenges with the Prop - I am new to 3d Printing so I attribute that to my inexperience and not the design. I know the size is in the description but...This is a big model! Size matters.
