Description

This is an updated design as I was not confident the original it was based on would be good long term as it relied solely on gravity and a few brick connectors which put too much reliance on the 2 technic pieces which would cause them to flex over time.

So I spent some time improving it, I made the brackets taller to provide more material vertically, added a third hole in the lower center of each bracket (removed some others from the lower bracket), optimised the print so minimal supports are needed, and importantly added 2 additional methods of locking the original legs to the bracket, so when mounted it is completely solid, there is no flex or movement whatsoever in the legs or model, also designed a holder for the info plaque, Rex and Yularen so they can all be displayed together.

Have included a hole guide in the profile, just fix the top bracket where you want it first, use the guide, the U shape top will sit flush with the bottom of the top bracket, use a level to get it straight and mark where the 2 holes for the lower bracket will go, drill these, mount the lower bracket then mark the very bottom hole, remove, drill and re mount, it should all line up nicely.

Before Fixing to the wall - spend a little bit of time cleaning up the studs on each piece, the ends tend to sag a little in this orientation, so a small file or blade is handy to round them off a little, test fit a brick to make sure it sits nice, I forgot to do this and realised it was not sitting right so had to take the Venator off, clean up and put it back, if you've not picked yours up yet, trust me it's a bit unwieldy to carry about and lift vertically, bits did fall off!!

To hang the Venator, I found it easier to take some of the panels off, it made it a bit lighter, gave somewhere stable to hold it (the outer shell of the ship is not great to hold vertically without pieces falling off), it also gave visibility of where the legs go, I tried when it was complete and bits just fell off, but give it a go you may find you can mount it whole.

Once mounted, use the L shape brackets to slide on and lock the top of the feet in on both brackets, thread the bolt in gently to lock it in place (the top one is a bit fiddly as not much hand clearance but take your time it will go in), once locked in slide the pins through the technic holes top and bottom to completely secure it.

I used Hollow Wall anchors to mount the brackets (see picture) these are pretty solid and use a 10mm outer diameter head bolt which the model is designed around, if you use normal m4/m5 screws use some washers so they don't pull through.

There are 2 profiles:

  • One for the the top and bottom mounts with the hole drilling guide.
  • One for the mounting bracket for the UCS plaque, Captain Rex and Admiral Yularen minifigures - included a mirrored left and right version depending on which side you want to mount it - connect both halves (they should slide in with enough resistance to not need glue) then the bracket will flex just enough to slide over the lower mount, then use the locking pin plate to hold it in place.

A1 Mini - The main brackets will print on the mini bed, but the guide and plaque holder will not.

It's taken me some time to redesign this as I like and to actually make it safe to mount the Venator vertically, so please consider giving me a boost to show your support.

Any reviews, feedback and pictures of your display are welcome!
