Description
Sadly, the Ikea Uppland Ottoman doesn't have a hinge. It almost makes the interior storage unusable. I fixed the issue with a custom designed hinge the fits the unique shape of this ottoman and allows the cushion top to remain upright and stable without a spring or other assistance! It honestly works awesome. It took a bunch of iterations inside cad to get the links and placement functioning and packaging right. I made mine of several different materials. I used PLA for the side plates (not load bearing) and bushings. I used PA6 GF for the links and ABS for the top brackets. It feels very strong and I kind of think the semi exotic materials were unnecessary. I included profiles for both the multi-material version and for PLA. This was a fun project that turned out perfect. Enjoy!
Needed hardware:
The carriage bolts coming in from the sides simple sit under the padding and are not visible once the fabric is installed back on the bottom.
To get the proper alignment when drilling holes to bolt the side plates to the side of the ottoman, simple slide the wall bracket back against the corner post and flush with the top. I then used the wall plates with the short and long pivot spacers installed as s drill guide when drilling the ¼" holes. Although the wallplate didn't need to be this tall, I designed it that way to make installation easy.
