Divine Blocks — Auspicious Guidance
The Sacred Ritual of Jiaobei in Taiwanese Folk Belief
In Taiwanese folk religion, jiaobei (筊杯, also called moon blocks) are sacred divination tools used to seek guidance or approval from the gods. When facing uncertainty or making important decisions, devotees perform the jiaobei divination ritual — a humble, respectful act of communication with the divine.
Traditionally, jiaobei were made from clam shells, later carved from wood or bamboo. Each block is shaped like a half-moon: one side flat (yang), the other convex (yin). During the ritual, worshippers hold a pair of jiaobei, pose a sincere question, and gently toss them to the ground. The way the two blocks land reveals the deity’s response.
Combinations and Meanings
- Shèng Jiāo (聖筊 / Holy Block) — One flat, one curved:
A clear sign of divine approval or blessing. For serious inquiries, three consecutive shèng jiāo confirm the god’s consent. - Xiào Jiāo (笑筊 / Smiling Block) — Two flat sides:
The gods “smile” but give no clear answer, implying the need for clarification or reconsideration. - Yīn Jiāo (陰筊 / Denial Block) — Two curved sides:
A divine “no.” The request is denied, or timing is not right — an invitation to pause and reflect.
Beyond fortune-telling, jiaobei express a profound cultural dialogue — a spiritual practice of humility, sincerity, and faith in cosmic balance. Each toss represents not mere chance, but a mindful connection between human intention and divine wisdom.
Design Concept — “Auspicious Guidance”
This 3D-printed artwork reimagines the timeless form of jiaobei through modern craftsmanship.
The flowing half-moon curves embody harmony between yin and yang, while the minimalist structure preserves the essence of reverence.
As a symbolic ornament, ritual object, or heartfelt gift, it conveys one message:
Ask with sincerity — and blessings will find their way to you.
