Description
Travel Soap Box – Rugged, Air-Drying, and Built for Everyday Use
This is the travel soap box I designed for my daily commute in my cycling bag. I wanted something practical, durable, and easy to print. The other available models weren't quite right for my needs.
Design Goals
- Rugged: Built to handle being dropped and thrown in a bag with tools.
- Air-drying: Designed to let soap dry out when closed, no need to let the soap dry.
- Secure: Stays shut when chucked in a bag.
Key Features
- Filament hinge pin (no print-in-place): Print-in-place hinges often get loose over time and by design have significant play. This design uses a short length of filament as a hinge pin for a smooth, tight action with minimal play.
- Friction-fit latch: Flexible fins provide a reliable, tool-free closure without weak points.
- Exposed gyroid infill: The infill pattern allows airflow and evaporation while remaining strong. At 40% infill, it also helps keep out grit and debris.
Print Profile
The standard print profile can be printed in any material. I printed in PLA and it works well. I added a brim as I have struggled with bed adhesion recently. You can remove this if this is not a problem for you. I did 4 walls because I want this to last.
Customization
I have found that gyroid @ 40% infill works best so the holder is not watertight, you can customize it in the slicer. The modifier can be removed if you want the holder fully closed, or the infill type/percentage can be changed… Hexagonal infill looked pretty good if anyone wants to give that a go.
If you want a different size, let me know and I should be able to modify the design (hopefully.. another kid on the way so time may be tight).
