Description

Welcome to the Bee Inn, the classiest bug bed-and-breakfast in town!

When I built my deck, I discovered that carpenter bees absolutely loved my fresh woodwork a little too much. Instead of evicting them, I gave them their own place — a stylish bee hotel designed to attract carpenter bees, mason bees, and other friendly wood-boring guests.

This model features 55 perfectly sized “rooms”, ranging from 2 mm to 12 mm, offering a variety of cozy suites for bees, wasps, and other pollinators who prefer the easy life of moving into a pre-drilled hole instead of doing the heavy drilling themselves.

If it’s going to face the full wrath of the weather, make sure to print in a UV- and moisture-resistant filament (like ASA, PETG, or a treated wood composite).

Customizable parameters:

  • backThickness: Extend the back for deeper tunnels
  • signTextProtrusion: Adjust how far the letters stand out
  • signBorderProtrusion: Set border depth (or make it flush)
  • signProtrusion: Control how much the sign pops from the front
  • screwHoleDiameter: Match your mounting hardware perfectly

🐝 A quick note:

Some folks have raised concerns about 3D-printed habitats for insects. While that’s a fair discussion, you can add some kind of liner if you want to keep things extra bee-friendly. I’ve personally seen bees move in and thrive happily!

At the end of the day, it’s all about encouraging pollinators to have more safe options — and fewer reasons to chew up your porch.

Give your local pollinators a five-star stay — and protect your deck while you’re at it!

Don't forget to share images of your friendly insects enjoying their new homes!!! Thanks!

Plastic tubes are NOT SAFE FOR BEES!!! First they trap moisture, create a poor surface for the bee's dirt to adhere to, and most importantly - THESE CAN'T BE CLEANED or EGGS HARVESTED! This will be a breeding ground for parasites and bacteria. Using plastic as a housing container for PAPER TUBES is fine, but please do not make the holes directly out of plastic. Paper tubes are cheap to replace once a year, and to open up and collect the pupae inside. This prevents parasites from collecting, and you can manually release the eggs at the best time of year to ensure their survival. If you insist on having plastic tubes, please reprint new tubes every year or two after ensuring you're not throwing away pupae.

Nobody likes a whinger. If you don't like it, just don't use it, and move along. Thanks for playing.

Nope, nobody should use this. It's not safe for the bees. Doesn't matter about "liking" it or not. Take a second to educate yourself.

Bees will use a home built out PETG filament, and it is considered one of the best 3D printing materials for beekeeping, provided it is used correctly. PETG is durable, UV-resistant, and stable against high temperatures

I read somewhere that wood filament is better for wood boring insects like carpenter bees. Do you think there is any merit to this?

I think it would have to be more wood than plastic to bore. not sure if there is a petg that would be good for any boring type insects

people freaking out about plastic for insects are clueless. Entomologists and hobbyists alike have kept insects of all types happily alive in all manner of plastic nests. I have over 10,000 ants living in printed nests in my home *right now*. If insects were so fragile that simply living in a plastic tube could kill them, they wouldn't be the most widespread form of life on this planet.

A perfect print. Scaled it bigger. Adjusted the middle hole to fit a petling. Made a geocache of it.

Great design. Printed with ASA (my first time) I hope that some Bee start to colonize it. Thanks to the designer

Thanks a lot! Let me know if it works for you. I've never tried it in ASA. I'm currently trying to figure out if wood filament is the best filament to use to attract these little guys.
