James May Bust

James May is motoring's English gentleman, a kind of science professor disguised as a test driver, with the soul of a patient engineer and a slightly exasperated grandfather

Among the Top Gear trio, he's the one desperately trying to maintain a shred of order while Clarkson and Hammond turn every test into an apocalypse of smoke, mud, and yelling

With his perpetually slightly too long hair and floral shirts that scream “Canary Islands holiday 1978”, James is affectionately nicknamed “Captain Slow” — not because he can't drive, but because he's the only one who believes braking before a corner is a sensible action

While the other two speed around like madmen, he's there, methodical, explaining the mechanics of the gearbox or discussing the quality of the interior finishes with the enthusiasm of an antique furniture restorer

The funniest thing is that, behind his apparent calm, there's a sharp, British-to-the-core humor, and a unique ability to always seem a little out of place… but never out of control

When something explodes — and on Top Gear, something always explodes — James sighs, shakes his head, and mutters a resigned “Oh cock!”, as if he were the only adult left on a school trip full of over-caffeinated children

In short, James May is the warm tea in the chaos of Top Gear: calm, brilliant, and inexorably slow

But without him, Clarkson and Hammond would just be two teenagers with a car and no one to remind them where the handbrake is
