Description

A "cowboy electrician" staged a surprise raid on my parents' house while I was away. Using what must have been a dust-covered, 100-year-old handsaw, he cut several magnificently shoddy holes in the ceiling. The new downlights not only blind me every time I walk by but also completely fail to cover the jagged, torn-up edges of the drywall.

He charged full price, too. I can only hope he uses that money to buy a simple six-dollar hole saw. Oh, wait! He probably doesn't even own a drill! Let's all have a moment of silence for his next "client."

Anyway, let's pull ourselves together and work our own magic. I fired up my treasured, free version of Fusion 360. My ancient computer whirred and squeaked, but it finally cranked out this downlight shade.

The structure is simple and should be widely compatible. I boldly used a 1.2mm wall thickness (that's 3 walls with a 0.4mm nozzle). My trusty old white PLA Basic is surprisingly tough. Just be patient when removing it from the build plate! Wait for it to cool completely. Do not use brute force, or you will live to regret it for all eternity.

And that's it. Nothing else... okay, I also added a little chamfer on the base. It probably does nothing special. I just saw the "chamfer" button and felt... compelled... to click it. No real purpose!

The hole for the downlight base is 85mm, and the shade's total diameter is 110mm. If that's still not big enough to cover the crater in your ceiling, I've included the STEP file. I'm just that helpful.

Oh, my friend, if none of the above made sense, don't even bother re-reading it. Just leave a comment with your downlight's dimensions. I'll do my best to let you know if this model will work, and if not, I'll kindly try to design a custom one for your (equally sad) situation. Stay strong. It's going to be okay.

Let's say NO to cowboy electricians together!

Bonus Story: My parents watched me tinker with this for half a day. After seeing the ceiling hole fixed and the blinding glare gone, they pondered for a moment and asked, "So... can you make us a wall lamp next?"

Thanks for your warning on the potential scam comment on my model. :)

You're welcome. It's just that I found this scam to be incredibly deceptive. Even as someone who's been around the internet for a long time, I had already opened the scam website before I even realized there was a problem.
