The Astor Markhor is found primarily in the northern regions of Pakistan (including the Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces), and in the southwestern part of Jammu and Kashmir in India. 

Its habitat includes high-altitude areas along the Indus and its tributaries, such as the Gilgit, Astor, and Hunza rivers. 

It can also be found in eastern Afghanistan, near the borders of Pakistan.

High in the snow-kissed mountains of Astore, where the clouds brush against ancient stone, the Markhor moves like a living legend. Its spiral horns gleam under the thin alpine sun, each twist a story of survival and quiet pride. The air around it hums with reverence, for few have ever seen this creature up close  and fewer still have forgotten its gaze once they have.

Known as the “King of the Cliffs,” the Astore Markhor is a symbol of perseverance and majesty. Where others falter on the jagged slopes, it climbs with grace, hooves striking sparks against the rock. Its beard sways like a mountain stream, and its stance holds the calm of ages. To the people of the valleys below, the Markhor is not merely an animal as it is the spirit of the mountains themselves, patient and unyielding.

Legends say the Markhor was born from the tears of a mountain spirit who wept for the loss of the sky’s light. Her tears hardened into horns that spiraled toward the heavens, giving her child the power to bridge earth and sky. Each turn of those horns is said to draw in wisdom from the winds, and each step leaves behind blessings for those who walk the path of courage.

The Astore Markhor teaches that strength is not in battle, but in balance between gentleness and resolve, between solitude and watchfulness.
