It helps to remove a length of fiber, known as a "sliver," from wool combs or hackles, creating a smooth and continuous roving. The diz is typically a small disc or plate with a hole in the center, through which fibers are pulled to align them into a consistent strand, ideal for worsted spinning, which produces a smoother and denser yarn. Dizzes can be made from various materials and come in different shapes and sizes, making them versatile tools for spinning.
