Description

Nothing says Halloween quite like a Living Severed Hand!

This fake hand prop is designed to look like you're holding a chopped hand with its own mind, but no! It was you the whole time!

This prop was based on an idea I saw for halloween 10 years ago that I actually made at the time with a pringles can, some velcro, cotton soaked with fake blood, and some working gloves. I must say this version slaps that one hard.

Read the whole description before you print anything: this prop was made with my average wrist of 18cm in mind, so naturally the opening has a dimension that might be unconfortable for some people, or might not even fit at all.

To use this comfortably, your wrist must not be larger than 6.5cm wide, and 5.5cm thick. This is to ensure the latch mechanism does not pinch your wrist and cause you pain while putting it on/off and using it. You have been warned.

Also as a disclaimer, this print needs an AMS, you need to print a few plates totaling around 7 hours for non-H2D users, and there is a small amount of handicrafts you must do to a pair of gloves (well, one glove).

Speaking of gloves, you need to get a pair of generic working gloves in a somewhat large size (mine are size 9/Large in Europe). Preferably some gloves with ample space and lack of interior padding to facilitate cutting them.

Now that the important info is laid out, here's what to print:

  • One printed arm (for both right and left hands) - for H2D users, you can print the plate with the arm with full stripes and skip the vertical stripes plate (Plate 04). This means Plate 07 for H2D users, and Plate 01 for everyone else (you need an AMS!)
  • One set of “latch and fingers” for your chosen hand - I picked my right hand (plates 02 or 05)
  • For non-H2D user - one set of vertical stripes to glue them on the “shirt” - Plate 04
    • IMPORTANT: the stripes orientation is the same as the printed arm, starting from the “opening” at the cuff, from left to right, going around the arm. The right side of each stripe (in the plate as printed) is the outer side (facing you). Glue each stripe with some super glue or similar to finish the “shirt” look.
  • If you want to cap the end with the fake chopped arm, print the apropriate cap (Plate 03). If not, print the clean cap (Plate 06) and then use your imagination to make the chopped end more realistic! I might try wrapping a cloth around the end with a rubber band and then soaking it with fake blood.
  • One small cover to insert near the wrist to give a more finished look (the cover is on the same plate as the arm)

Now to the assembly!

Grab your desired glove and face it with the palm towards you. Use an x-acto knife or your preferred cutting utensil, and make the 3 cuts marked in red.
Connect the pointer finger with the latch. If it's too tight, give it a few taps, but don't worry, it doesn't need to be 100% inserted.
Start by inserting the latch with the thin part towards the outside of the fingers, and try to place the latch pins through the finger openings made earlier.
It should look like this.
Grab the other part with the remaining fingers and insert either from the large opening, or from the normal hand opening, and then insert the fingers
Now this part can be a little tricky, but you must slide the connection from the latch to the fingers. If it's hard, try removing the latch and do it outside to loosen the connection. Then try again inside the glove, as it's very hard to insert the full parts connected.
If you've done everything correctly, your glove should look like this!
Try the insertion mechanism by wrapping the glove with some force to bend the arm opening, align the latch pins and see them click inside.

Now do the same but with your hand in the glove! Face your palm up between tthe glove's fingers, insert your hand in the arm's opening, and force the connection like before. It might take a few tries (or someone's help) to get used to it.

After that, insert the small cover with the prons facing down to hide them a bit. Again, ask for someone's help or take a few tries.

To cap things off, get the cap you printed, and add a bit of glue around it to glue it inside. There's a small lip to help guide it.

If you don't want to add the cap, make whatever you want to give it the look you want.

If you want to take it to the next level, add some fake blood to the gloves and throughout the arm to make it look more real.

And BOOM! You're done! Now go spook some people :D
