Description

This model represents the bones of the left foot and ankle generated from a computed tomography scan. It is life size so it fits better on a printer like the A1. Each bone is clearly distinguishable including sesamoid bones--I added just enough connections so the whole thing would print in one piece.

 

My changes to the original:

Original model was made available on the NIH3D Print Exchange by user MySegmenter under CCBY license. I separated the bones of the left foot and leg from their full skeleton model, remeshed the bones to optimize them for printing, added connections where needed to print in one piece, and cut the tibia and fibula around the distal ⅓.

 

Printing:

  • 0.20 mm layers
  • 2 walls, 10% grid infill
  • tree supports at 30%
    • top interface layers = 2
    • top interface spacing = 0,
    • top z distance = 2
    • optional: increase initial layer expansion to 5 or more if you think adhesion might be an issue for your trees

My print is shown with Sunlu matte bone white PLA--matte PLAs make supports much easier to remove. I printed in essentially anatomical orientation since most of the bones are angled anyways in this orientation. This also confines the support surfaces to the bottom. The foot sits upright just fine without a base so I didn't bother making one. 

 

Great reference for a doctor or osteology and anthropology classes for learning your foot bones!

i printed this for my podiatrist as a gift and he loved it. He did mention that the big toe in this model is partially amputated lol.

First printing failed with one of the tree supports. However, I did try printing this with PETG instead of PLA. After changing the print profile through Bambu Studio to a profile optimized for PETG, it came out well. I forgot to take a photo of it before I removed most of the supports. Much larger than I expected! I plan on using this in my PT clinic so patient's have a better visual when trying to explain the complexities of the foot and ankle.

I found using the cool/cold plate for A1 has much greater successful rate. In addition, do you think the hallux is too short compared to other toes?

I haven't had an issue with the textured plate, but that's good to know about the cool plate. Yes, I do think the hallux is pretty short.
