Description

🏔️ Sugar Bush Ski Hill – Miniature Diorama

This is my 3D-printed model of Sugar Bush, inspired by the feel of a lively ski hill in winter.

I created the base terrain using GIS data and Blender, shaping the real-world topography into a detailed, printable landscape. The skiers and trees were also designed by me — I wanted each tiny element to tell a story. Whether it’s a skier in motion, one who’s taken a tumble, or a quiet grove of trees, every part of this model adds to the personality of the hill.

For the chairlift, I scaled down another Maker’s model to 50%, and I scaled a cabin model to 20% for the base area — both chosen to fit the proportions of this diorama perfectly.

If you decide to print your own version, I recommend printing skiers in groups of six — usually only two will come out perfectly at this small scale, but the ones that don’t can make great “wiped-out” skiers on the slopes!

The goal of this project is to let others tell their own story on the hill — add your own figures, trees, or terrain details to make it your own version of Sugar Bush.

To make the diorama easier to transport and gift, I also designed a custom box/cage system. The base fits snugly inside, and the walls keep all the tiny details safe during travel. It also comes with a lid to fully enclose the model so you can bring it to someone—like I’m doing for my cousin—without worrying about the skiers, trees, or chairlift shifting around. It’s a simple way to protect all the small, delicate parts while still showing off the scene when needed.

The box/cage ended up being more useful than I expected — this model traveled through 5 states, survived 3 different airplanes, and made it through 8 car rides, all while staying completely intact. The cage kept everything securely in place, from the tiny skiers to the chairlift cable, so the whole scene arrived exactly the way it left.
