Description

This model is a fully 3D printed Optical Camouflage, which is basically a Lenticular Lens due to the natural feature of the FDM printer.
I made it because I was trying to make a human-sized Optical Camouflage device, and this is the most cheap way to get one working piece using only 3D printing and basic materials.

You can use it in magic tricks (it works quite impressive; you can put anything in your hand and cover it with this Optical Camouflage and it will be totally invisible), physics education, optics experiments, and even as a stealth camouflage—like you're playing Metal Gear in real life or using Thermal Optical Camo from Ghost in the Shell. You can also use it as a cloak shield in airsoft games, adding a fun tactical or sci-fi element to your gear. Its really cool, Isn't it?

It’s a great tool for STEM learning, illusion-based art, or just showing cool technology with your friends.

Printing Tips

And to the print setting, this model is designed to be printed with transparent filament

Transparent PETG, PLA, TPU95A have been tested and work well. PETG recommended due to its high transparency

Dry filament and Lower speed will gets you better transparency
If you download STL files instead of .3MF,Remember to turn vase mode on to get it works.

When the print is done, remove the button and use scissors to cut it along the side, splitting it into two pieces.
Congratulations! You now have your Optical Camouflage!

Its a simple CAD work so if you wants to make your own, JUST DO IT. Make some cube or cylinder and stretch them, print with vase mode and you will get your unique Optical Camouflage, its really fun to make your own model.

And if you have any idea but aren't able to design it yourself, feel free to let me know—I'd be happy to help bring it to real life!

I was buying Prism sheet to make my Optical Camo but Patrick Gibney comes out and saved my day, big shout out to him!!!!

I printed it overnight in transparent PLA at 50% speed, but somehow it deformed and slightly collapsed on itself. The lid on my P1S was slightly opened, and the temperature in my room was 22°C. Any idea what could have caused it or what can I change to fix it? I also printed the small sample and that printed without deforming.

Due to the decreased print speed (it’s a clever move though), heat can build up more easily in the part that leads to collapse. You might need to increase cooling — higher fan speed or a slightly lower nozzle temperature could help. Thanks for printing and Merry Christmas!

Excuse me, what percent infill did you use?

Thanks for asking! Since we use vase mode here(it’s already set in the 3MF), you won’t need any infill. Happy printing!!

somehow it collapsed on the provided P2S profile. maybe cooling is a bit tricky with this one, great idea though!
