Nigersaurus was a unique and fascinating dinosaur that lived around 110 million years ago during the middle of the Cretaceous period. It belonged to the group known as sauropods, the long-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs, but it was unlike most of its relatives in both size and appearance. Measuring about nine metres in length and weighing roughly four tonnes, it was relatively small for a sauropod, comparable in size to a modern elephant. Its fossils were first discovered in the Republic of Niger, in the Sahara Desert, which is how it received its name, meaning “Niger reptile.”

One of the most remarkable features of Nigersaurus was its skull and feeding apparatus. It had an unusually wide, straight-edged mouth filled with over 500 slender, replaceable teeth arranged in tightly packed rows, forming what looked almost like a vacuum cleaner nozzle. This specialized dental structure allowed it to graze close to the ground, cropping soft vegetation such as ferns and horsetails. Its teeth were replaced rapidly—roughly every two weeks—indicating it fed constantly on abrasive, low-lying plants.
