Kentrosaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, around 155 million years ago, in what is now Tanzania. It was a close relative of the more famous Stegosaurus and belonged to the same family, the Stegosauridae. Although smaller than its relatives, measuring roughly 4.5 meters in length, Kentrosaurus was one of the most strikingly armed dinosaurs of its time, covered with an elaborate arrangement of plates and spikes that ran along its back and tail. Its body was low and heavy, supported by short, sturdy legs, giving it a slow but stable gait suited to grazing on low vegetation such as ferns, cycads, and early conifers.
The most distinctive feature of Kentrosaurus was its array of defensive spines. The front half of its body bore pairs of small, flat plates along the neck and shoulders, which gradually transitioned into long, sharp spikes along the hips and tail. The tail itself ended in several elongated spikes that could have been used as a formidable weapon against predators like Allosaurus or Ceratosaurus. These spikes were arranged in pairs and could swing with great force, suggesting that Kentrosaurus relied heavily on them for defense rather than speed or agility. Its small, elongated skull contained a beak-like mouth ideal for cropping tough plant material, and its teeth were shaped for slicing vegetation rather than grinding it.
