Description

🐔 Wall-Mounted Chicken Grit & Oyster Shell Feeder

(a.k.a. “The Anti-Spill Snack Bar”)

If you’ve ever watched chickens enthusiastically knock over their grit dish five minutes after you fill it, this project is for you.
This simple, rugged wall-mounted feeder keeps grit and oyster shells clean, dry, and—most importantly—upright.

💡 The Problem

My flock’s old dish spent more time upside-down than right-side-up. Between curious beaks and the occasional foot-perch, grit was scattered everywhere. So I decided to engineer a permanent solution that even the rowdiest hen couldn’t topple.

🛠️ The Design

  • Bracket: Printed in ASA-CF for maximum outdoor durability—UV, rain, snow, and chicken drama resistant.
  • Dish: Printed in PETG, smooth and washable, with optional drain holes if you prefer (I left mine open).
  • The design mounts flush to a wall or coop post with a few small screws.
  • The bowl drops in snugly, making it easy to remove for cleaning or refilling but impossible for chickens to fling into orbit.

⚙️ Print Settings

  • Bracket (ASA-CF):
    • Layer height: 0.2 mm
    • Walls: 4 – 5 perimeters
    • Infill: 35 % (gyroid or cubic)
    • Nozzle: ≥ 0.4 mm hardened
    • Orientation: Mounting face on the bed
  • Dish (PETG):
    • 15 % infill
    • Layer height: 0.2 mm

📏 Dimensions

Designed for an 80 mm OD × 30 mm deep dish, but scalable if you have a different bowl. Just scale both parts equally in your slicer.

😂 Bonus

Since installing these, not a single chicken has managed to knock one off the wall. They still try, of course—it’s in their contract—but physics is no longer on their side.
