Personal Note
Phew. Almost didn’t make it in time for the contest. After a month of learning fusion 360 and designing this up I barely finished it in time. I’ve been printing a ton of stuff from @kitcrafters and @polymech3d, so I was inspired to start making my own scifi models. That and seeing the ship customization in No Mans Sky. Ok enough about me, please enjoy my first shared model :)
Space Grid
I’m proud to introduce SpaceGrid to everyone! This new modular spaceship building system is created with 3 simple things in mind: cool ships, easy customization, smooth building experience. With that being said every single part and tolerance has been extensively tested to bring you the Spacegrid system you see today. Frames, Inserts, Armor, and detail pieces are all you need to print to start your own fleet. In addition, the insert pieces have been modeled around 4x2mm magnets to add another layer of easy swapping to your shipyard.
Battleship Alpha
Now into the meat of this model, please welcome the SpaceGrid Battleship Alpha Pack. With 42 unique parts included, you can create your own unique fleet just from this page. Battleship Alpha was created as Earth’s first functional battle craft to be incorporated in their space fleet. Inspired by naval battleships, we now have the capability of dominating the seas and space!
This model has two separate files: Battleship Alpha Standard and Battleship Alpha Parts
The standard Battleship Alpha comes with all the parts necessary to build the main ship in the image, plus a few extra of the pesky small inserts. I'm currently working on a pdf instruction guide, but in the meantime, I hope there's detailed enough images for assembly. Glue isn’t necessary but it is recommended if you don’t intend on swapping parts out. I highly encourage magnets for the turrets at least to swap them around with other ones… when I make some more. To make swapping like in the images easier, I used a total of 44 magnets.
The parts file includes one of every unique part I’ve designed as a result of this project. This includes parts not in the standard ship files. If you want increased customization, this pack is the one for you. If you do end up making your own ship I'd love to see it, message me!
Print Notes
I wanted to design this with easy printing in mind; therefore, I used the .2 default print file for everything and all pieces were tested using the P1S, P1P, and A1 printers. A clean print bed, dry filament, and calibrated printer are key for the insert tolerances. If you are unsure about your printer, I would suggest printing an armor piece, frame, and some inserts to see if any parts need to be scaled +/- 1-2% to accommodate your printing, especially if using 4x2mm magnets (they aren’t as flexible as PLA). If you have any questions, please feel free to drop them in the comments or send me a message!
