Purpose

The ice screw gear clip is a specially developed equipment clip for climbing harnesses. It serves for the ergonomic and secure attachment of ice screws or similar equipment. The design solves the problem of conventional gear carabiners where ice screws hang low and are bothersome. The raised position on the harness improves freedom of movement and significantly facilitates handling while climbing.

Attachment:

  • The clip is simply slipped over the waist belt of the climbing harness.
  • Additional securing is provided by an elastic rubber band at the bottom end of the clip, which secures it against slipping out.
  • This combination ensures a stable but easily detachable fit – no drilling, no modification of the harness required.
  • Function

  • Positions ice screws higher and closer to the body than classic gear carabiners.
  • Minimizes annoying swinging or rattling of the screws.
  • Simplifies clipping in and out with one hand, even with gloves.
  • Not load-bearing – exclusively for equipment organization (max. static load approx. 5 kg).
  • Advantages

  • Stable fixation: No slipping out thanks to additional rubber securing at the bottom.
  • Ergonomic height: Screws hang shorter and remain accessible without interfering with climbing.
  • Lightweight: Minimal material usage for maximum function.
  • Compatible: Suitable for almost all common climbing harnesses.
  • Quick assembly: No tools, no modification – simply attach and secure.
  • Application area

  • Ice climbing
  • Alpine climbing / Mixed Climbing
  • Equipment organization during approach or belay station setup
  • Safety Notice

  • Not a PPE component!
Not suitable for belaying, climbing, or carrying people.
  • Intended only for storing and organizing equipment on the harness.
  • Check for secure fit and intact structure before each use.

hello can you make a more robust version with a larger harness anchor so I can use it for a chainsaw I scaled it in the slicer it turned out very well but I have problems getting the trigger to line up with a thickness of 20 mm it is very robust

It’s a pretty good design, I printed it in PETG HF and works pretty well. I was very astonished how the gate works so well, it feels like a metal one with a spring. I tried it quickly to hold one ice screw while ice climbing, it held well and didn’t break. I’ll try to put more weight next time with several screws. I have 2 concerns though, it still look a little fragile. It might be possible to strengthen it a little. We’ll see with several uses in cold if it hold in time. The second “concern” is it is not as handy as a Petzl Carrytool. It would be nice to add some blocker to be able to put multiple ice screws on the top, as on the carry tool. Anyway, I recommend it for ice climbing, mainly if you begin and want to spare some bucks. However I would not take it in a expedition (would be sad to spare 10 bucks to lose several hundreds bucks of ice screws if it breaks and fall of a mountain…)
