Brief information about Santa Maria del Fiore
The Cathedral of Florence was begun in 1296 (Arnolfo di Cambio) and consecrated in 1436. Famous is the self-supporting brick dome constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi – a milestone of the early Renaissance. The freestanding bell tower, Giotto's Campanile, is part of the ensemble in Piazza del Duomo. The historic city center of Florence is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
