This creation is a 3D reproduction of the famous Ambiorix statue, located on the Grand-Place of Tongeren (Belgium).
Who is Ambiorix?
Ambiorix was a leader of the Eburones, a Gallic tribe from the region of present-day Belgium. He is best known for inflicting a heavy defeat on Julius Caesar's Roman troops in 54 BC during the Gallic Wars. Considered a national hero in Belgium, a large statue in his honor was erected in Tongeren in 1866.
Creation Process
Visual basis: I used several photos of the statue found on Google to get a precise view from different angles.
Generative AI: I then asked Gemini to reproduce a realistic and faithful version of the statue, without scenery, and from multiple perspectives.
STL Conversion: From these renders, I used Tencent (generative AI for STL) to obtain a 3D printable file.
Retouching: The STL file was slightly reworked on Meshmixer to correct certain details.
Print preparation: Finally, I oriented and sized the model in my slicer to prepare for printing.
3D Printing: The final model was FDM 3D Printed.
This project is a fine example of what the combination of photographs → generative AI → retouching → 3D printing can achieve to bring a historical work back to life.
