Description
Darkness creeps beyond the safety of the town as whispers of undead rising from the barrow hills spread among the people. This chapter brings a full encounter set featuring monsters, maps, and a story that leads your heroes from the warmth of the tavern to the cold stones of an ancient crypt.
Perfect for DnD, Pathfinder, or any fantasy skirmish system.
The Story
After restocking supplies and preparing for new adventures, the group settles in for the night at Two Kegs’ Tavern. But in the mist of the night, a hooded figure slips through the back door and makes an attempt to kidnap Kaela, the daughter of the famed innkeeper Barl “Two Kegs” Umberpo. (find Two Kegs here - https://makerworld.com/en/models/1786592-inn-keeper-two-kegs-dnd-d-d-pathfinder-mini#profileId-1903704 ) and find Kaela here - https://makerworld.com/en/models/1844659-female-fighter-steel-mug-kaela-two-kegs-daughter#profileId-1971146 )
The heroes spring into action—rushing to the sound of struggle as Kaela fights off her attacker. Together, they manage to drive the shadowy figure away into the night, though he escapes before they can unmask him.
Shaken but unbroken, Kaela demands answers—this was the second attempt to take her. The first came weeks earlier, when a band of goblins ambushed her caravan while she was escorting one of her father’s shipments of his legendary Oak Ale to a neighboring town.
Desperate to uncover the truth, Kaela begs her father for his blessing to join the adventuring party and help hunt down whoever is behind these attacks. With tears in his eyes, Two Kegs gives his blessing, saying:
“The spirit of adventure runs in your blood, same as your mother and me. But be careful, lass—I’d swear that was the same shadow that lurked near town after the goblin raid. Word is, he’s been seen haunting the crypts outside the old barrow hills.”
With that, Kaela shoulders her pack and grips her father’s old adventuring hammer—determined to uncover who wants her captured… and why.
They leave Two Kegs’ Inn and Tavern under moonlight, their spirits high and purpose clear. But exhaustion soon catches up, and they decide to make camp before reaching the grave hills. As they rest, the forest grows unnaturally still—until the night erupts with movement.
Creatures of the dark crawl from the mist, drawn by the same foul magic that haunts the barrows. Yet the party is ready—alert, steady, and
seasoned by the road. Steel meets fang and claw, spells flash through the gloom, and the monsters are swiftly dispatched.
The message is clear: whatever waits in those graves knows they are coming.
By dawn, they find the crypt—its stone doors cracked and half-buried in creeping vines. With weapons drawn, they descend into the cold darkness below.
The air grows thick with rot and whispers as they enter the first chamber, where unnatural creatures claw at the tomb’s walls. The adventurers stand firm, cutting through the undead that have overrun the resting place of the long dead. When the final skeleton falls, silence returns—but only briefly.
A faint light flickers from a passage beyond. The group advances into a second room—one that’s been twisted into an unholy fusion of bedchamber and laboratory. Strange runes pulse along the walls, and in the center, the hooded figure stands, completing a guttural chant.
As the last word leaves his lips, a surge of yellow-orange energy flares across the chamber. Bones scattered around the floor lift into the air, clattering and twisting together into a massive, grotesque skeleton—a towering abomination born from dozens of corpses, its empty sockets burning with that same unnatural light. (Find the Giant Bone Golem here - https://makerworld.com/en/models/1817032-giant-bone-golem-dnd-d-d-pathfinder-mini#profileId-1939127 )
But before the horror can fully form, Kaela, gripped by fury and defiance, charges forward. Her father’s hammer blazes with reflected light as she smashes through the rising bones—each strike cracking ribs, shattering limbs, and breaking the spell mid-formation. The runes flicker and die, the chamber trembling as the unholy energy collapses in on itself.
The hooded figure lets out a furious hiss and lunges toward the group—his hands glowing with necrotic fire. The adventurers stand united, steel flashing and spells roaring as they clash in the glow of the dying runes. With a final cry, Kaela drives her hammer through the necromancer’s chest, shattering the amulet that fueled his dark power.
He staggers, collapsing to his knees—ashen, broken, yet smiling through the blood.
“This… is not the end,” he rasps. “My master will bring me back. Your efforts… are futile.”
The last light fades from his eyes, leaving only the echo of his words. The group exchanges uneasy glances—if this was merely an apprentice, what kind of power commands such servants?
As the crypt grows silent once more, Kaela exhales and looks toward the stairway leading out.
“Then we find the master,” she says quietly. “And end this for good.”
