Description
USS Monitor vs. CSS Virginia (Merrimack)
⚔️ Battle of Hampton Roads — March 9, 1862
On March 9, 1862, during the American Civil War, the world witnessed a revolutionary naval engagement at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The battle pitted the Union’s newly launched USS Monitor, an innovative ironclad warship, against the CSS Virginia, a Confederate ironclad rebuilt from the burned hull of the former USS Merrimack.
The engagement followed the Virginia’s devastating attack the day before, where it sank two Union wooden warships. When the Monitor arrived overnight, it intercepted the Virginia the next morning, leading to a historic four-hour duel.
Though the battle ended in a tactical draw, it marked the end of the era of wooden warships and the beginning of modern naval warfare.
