BSX-91 Daedalus
Print Profile(1)

Description
The BSX-91 Daedalus was an experimental Colonial Fleet vessel, developed shortly before the Second Cylon War. Its purpose was to test a new generation of warship concepts—cheaper to build, more flexible in role, and operable with minimal crew.
Key Innovations:
- Semi-Automated Control: Daedalus was equipped with a hybrid system combining automated core functions with the option of manual intervention. In emergencies, the ship could be operated by a single pilot or commander, ensuring survivability even under catastrophic crew losses.
- Modular Armament: Instead of fixed, integrated weapon systems, Daedalus carried standardized hardpoints that could mount interchangeable weapon packages—ranging from anti-fighter batteries and torpedo launchers to electronic warfare suites. This made the ship a highly adaptable platform, useful for escort, reconnaissance, or light assault missions. The tradeoff was reduced heavy armor protection, leaving the ship more vulnerable in direct engagements with Cylons.
- Civilian Components: To cut costs and speed up construction, engineers incorporated several technologies originally designed for civilian ships, most notably the engines. While less durable than full military-grade systems, they gave Daedalus excellent speed and fuel efficiency.
Project Evaluation:
The Daedalus project was viewed as a risky compromise between innovation and practicality. The Fleet hoped it would open new tactical possibilities—rapid mission adaptation and minimal crew requirements. In practice, however, the reduced armor and reliance on civilian components made the ship less suited for frontline combat. As a result, only a single prototype was ever built, and the project was shelved.
