Description

The B787, commonly known as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is a family of twin-engine, wide-body commercial airliners developed by Boeing. The aircraft is renowned for its advanced technology, superior fuel efficiency, and enhancements to the passenger experience, especially on long-haul routes.

Key characteristics

  • Fuel efficiency: The Dreamliner's design incorporates lightweight composite materials for its airframe and features new, efficient engines, which together result in a 20–25% reduction in fuel consumption compared to its predecessors, such as the Boeing 767. This allows airlines to operate more direct "point-to-point" routes.
  • Passenger experience: The 787's cabin is designed for greater comfort, with features that address common passenger complaints about air travel.
    • Largest windows: The cabin features the largest windows of any commercial jet, which passengers can dim electronically with the touch of a button.
    • Improved cabin environment: The Dreamliner is pressurized to a lower cabin altitude and maintains higher humidity than older aircraft, reducing passenger fatigue and the effects of jet lag.
    • Noise reduction: A quieter cabin environment is achieved through acoustically treated engine nacelles and noise-reducing technology.
  • Advanced technology: The 787 uses a "more-electric" system architecture, where many traditional pneumatic functions are powered by electrical systems for increased efficiency. It is also the first airliner with an airframe primarily constructed from composite materials.
  • Variants: The Dreamliner family includes three main variants with different capacities and ranges:
    • 787-8: The original version, with a seating capacity of 210–250 passengers.
    • 787-9: A longer model, seating 250–290 passengers.
    • 787-10: The largest variant, designed for high-capacity routes, accommodating 300–330 passengers.
