Description

I needed a locking sanding block for my 5 inch sanding discs. Works great with any kind of 5 inch discs and can be scaled to 120% to fit 6 inch sanding discs if needed.

Should print fine with any material. Use my print profile which adds extra infill in specific areas to strengthen the the pieces so that the threaded part does not rip off if tightened too much.

It works best if you fold the paper as tight as possible around the base and then while holding it putting on the main body piece and while holding that tight, screw down the locking piece.

this thing is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I may try to add a little padding between the sanding disc and the holder so it has a little give like a sanding sponge.

I wonder if you could print it out of TPU. It would probably be stiff enough but have a little give. might not hold on enough. But a small pad would be great. Glad you enjoyed.

That's a great idea. I may try that instead.

Let me know how it goes. I can also probably add a small base piece that could be printed in tpu as well.

Printed in 120% for 6 inch sanding discs in PETG. Worked well overall. Unfortunately, one support fell off (but this was probably my mistake). A solution to keep the disc somewhere in the sander would be a great addition.

I’ll see if I can’t find a way to store the disc somewhere in the block. It’s a great idea. By support do you mean one of the sides? I hadn’t considered that as a weak point but it definitely could be with some lateral force. I’m also curious if the sandpaper locks down with PETG since it’s pretty flexible. I wasn’t sure if the side walls would flex too much making the clamping ineffective.

There is basically no flexibility in whole thing. So no problem with clamping the sandpaper. By support I meant one the printing supports for the screw. I cam é back to the printer and it had fallen off and there were some print defects where it was supposed to be. As I said I think it was my mistake since it was close to the edge of the print plate and I hadn't cleaned it in a while.

Awesome. That was my experience I just didn’t know if maybe with PETG it would be a problem but sounds like it’s not. Thanks for the response!

There are a bunch of supports that need to be ripped off. In your second picture, the top part is really clean. That’s the actual print, but everything below that is supports. Use your scraper to separate the top part and then you can pull them off. From your first picture from the bottom you can also see the gap between the main piece (the innermost circle) and the supports (everything else). Sorry that wasn’t clearer and hopefully that helps!

Great model, Liked it so much I created a Multiboard mount for it. I know, it's an openGrid panel, used a multiboard adapter.

Easy to print. I used ASAfor the base and threaded nut, and TPU for the top grip so it would be more comfortable to hold. Thanks for the model.

A little hard to assemble it the first time, the thread didnt print very weel but after sanding it a bit, it worked well!

Shoot. What part did you sand? Threads can definitely be a bit trick and I’ve always found that slowly tightening and loosening each time tightening just a bit further definitely helps. Sounds like it’s working as expected though after sanding.

Well, i actually used an exacto knife to cut out a bit of of the sharpness on the threads, it had a very thin edge which doesn print very well lol When i design these things i like to use the coil function on Fusion 360 instead of Thread function as it gives me more freedom and allows me to make them round instead of sharp!
