Description

I’m sharing a modular pencil case system for pens and pencils. The idea is simple: you print a few basic modules (flat plate 10×25, frame 10×25, hinge, and latch) in whatever quantities you need and assemble a pencil case that fits you—anything from a single compact compartment to a long “accordion” of multiple independent sections. All parts connect like building bricks.

What’s included

  • Plate 10×25 — a flat panel (used as bottom/lid).
  • Frame 10×25 — a rim that sets the compartment height.
  • Hinge — for opening/closing the section.
  • Latch (lock) — keeps the lid from opening in a bag (optional).
  • Pencil holder — an insert/organizer with slots/“comb” to secure pens and pencils so they don’t rattle or scratch.
  • Compartment divider — a vertical partition that fits into the frame to split one big compartment into two smaller ones (or more, if you use several).

Example configurations

  • One full-width compartment (opens as a whole):
    plate + frame + frame + two hinges + frame + plate
    Print: plate ×2, frame ×3, hinge ×2, (optional) latch ×1 + (optional) holder ×1 and/or divider ×1.
  • Two independent compartments (each opens separately):
    plate + frame + two hinges + frame + plate + frame + two hinges + frame + plate
    Print: plate ×3, frame ×4, hinge ×4, (optional) latch ×2 + (optional) holders ×2 and/or dividers ×2.

You can extend to more sections—just repeat the pattern plate / frame / hinge / frame as many times as you need. Add the holder and divider only to the sections you want.

Highlights

  • Modular. Print as many frames and plates as you need.
  • Organized. The holder secures writing tools; the divider separates long items from small bits (refills, eraser, clips).
  • Serviceable. If something breaks, reprint a single piece.
  • Personalizable. Mix colors (one for plates, another for frames), add a name tag or stickers.
  • Secure. Use the printed latch if the case will live in a backpack.

Print recommendations (general)

  • Material: PLA / PETG. PLA is plenty for school use; choose PETG for extra toughness.
  • Layer height: 0.20 mm (use 0.16 mm for hinges/latch if you want a finer fit).
  • Infill: plates/frames 15–25%; holder 20–30%; divider 10–15%.
  • Walls (perimeters): plates/frames 3–4; holder 3; divider 2–3.
  • Supports: plates/frames/divider — none; hinges/latch — as needed (depends on your orientation).
  • Hinge orientation: place the hinge so its axis runs along the layer lines—that greatly improves durability.

Assembly

  1. Build the sandwich: plate → frame(s) → plate.
  2. Install two hinges on the opening side (one near each end).
  3. Press-fit the holder and/or divider inside the chosen section(s).
    • Tight fit? Reduce XY scale by 0.5–1% for the small inserts, or lightly chamfer edges with a craft knife.
  4. Add the latch on the opposite side if you want a snap-close.
  5. For multi-section builds, repeat the pattern as in the “Two compartments” example.

Safety & care

  • For kids, avoid overly thin walls around hinges.
  • Don’t leave in a hot car or direct sun (especially with PLA).
  • Clean with a damp cloth; avoid abrasives.

I’d love to see your custom builds—share photos and tell me how many compartments (and which inserts) ended up “just right” for your daily carry. Happy printing and click-click assembling!
