Description

This is a printable version of a vintage bugle that plays remarkably well. Check the comments!

There are 3 versions of the Bugle available, depending on the printer that you have and the type of Bugle that you want.

  • Bugle Vx H2x.3mf print profile can was printed as a full scale version of an antique bugle that a friend gave me. It can be printed on a H2x printer or a printed on a printer that has a Z height of at least 294cm. This version is printed Bell down to minimize the surface effects of using supports.
  • The Bugle X1c, Pxx, A1 0.85 Vx.3mf print profile is scaled to 85%, which can be printed on an X1C, P1x or A1 printer, or a printer that has a Z height of at least 250cm. This version is printed Bell down to minimize the surface effects of using supports.
Note that the scaled down version will play at a slightly higher pitch.
  • The Bugle V2 P1S Full Size tilted.3MF print profile tilts the full size verion of the Bugle so it can be printed on a P2S, P1x or A1 printer. The trade-off is print time and surface quality vs. pitch. The supports that are used to hold it in position cause some of the surfaces to be rougher than if the horn is printed Bell down. Look at the pictures in then 3MF file for the surface quality issues. Note that this version will play at the same pitch as the Bugle Vx H2x.3mf print profile.

For the all versions, I recommend buying a commercial 7C mouthpiece, which these models are compliant with. I used this one from Amazon; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P2EKMFC. It is well made, works great and is not expensive.
I found the plastic mouthpiece to be hard on the lips, no matter how much I sanded it. But it will let you try out the bugle until a real mouthpiece arrives.

The H2x version is 294mm tall, so it is too tall to be printed on printers with a 256mm Z range, e.g., an X1C, P1x or A1. The scaled version is ~250mm tall.

Note: If you don't want to use my print profile, use Bambu Studio to extract the STL Files. Then use the support painting feature to kill any supports generated inside the tubes of the bugle.

Enjoy!

V1 - Initial release.

V2 - Added printable mouthpiece, and an X1C/P1x/A1 Print Profile.

V3 - Updated scaled (P1x) 3MF to be compatible with a commercial mouthpiece.

V4 - Added a ‘tilted’ print profile so a full size bugle can be printed in a 256x265x256 build area.

1000000/10 this model is crazy good, so good that I’m using it at scouts, for 1 dollar of filament it’s better than a 40 dollar bugle on amazon. the only problem is the mouthpiece, it kinda sucks and it barely fits on my mouth… thanks for a great model, I would LOVE IT if you made more models like this!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁

Also, what other models do you have in mind?

Mutes, mouthpieces, trumpet accessories, a bugle case, oh and you should make a v3 that the lead pipe of the bugle actually fits normal mouthpieces, and make it print on medium size printer like the a1,p2s, p1s, p1p, etc.

I was surprised too. It plays remarkably well for the price of a mouthpiece.

I designed this for a friend and she was pleased with it. I played with a little using a printed mouthpiece. My lips were sore in minutes, even after sanding it with fine sand paper. A metal mouthpiece is much easier on the lips. Does your mouthpiece fit in it firmly? For the P1x version I simply scaled the horn and the mouthpiece down. The person that I did it for was happy with the plastic mouthpiece, but I have been wondering if I should modify to allow a professional mouthpiece to be properly fitted.

Wow! That looks great! I tried 3 times with gold silk and the supports kept falling, so i gave up and used regular PLA. who's filament did you use?

I used Silky Gold MH Build Series PLA from MatterHackers: https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/silky-gold-mh-build-series-pla-filament-175mm-1kg/sk/MAQNPYVJ Supports broke away cleanly with no damage to the actual print.

I have been focusing on giving my grandchildren things that make noise. The kids love them, but my daughter, not so much :-)

I used to play euphonium in high school. I’m definitely trying out all of the horns to brainwash my kids early. So far this has been the best one! Great mouth piece & a very resonant sound. One day some one will up load a euphonium… muahahaha

I am surprised how good it works. I used a 7c trumpet mouthpiece. But it was not in tune, it was tuned in B and not in Bb or C. That was because I printed the P1S version.

You are the first person to comment the tuning. Thanks. It is something that I'm concerned about but don't know how to evaluate. I don't play, and I have tin ear. Did you print the H2D or P1S version? A friend gave an old bugle and, for the H2D version, I made a model that matched its outer dimensions as closely as possible. But since it is plastic, not brass, the 'tubing' wall thickness is much more. I was concerned about how this change might affect the tuning. For the P1S version I simply scaled its length to fit in the build space. So I knew it would be tuned high because of its shorter tube length. I would appreciate any help getting tuning correct.

I printed the P1S Version. That explains everything. Maybe you could design a tuned version for p1s/a1/x1c. But it works very well! Thank you for Sharing this 3d Model!

That looks really good! I tried several times print it in silk, but the supports kept collapsing. Finally, I gave up. What filament did use?

Hi, I just posted a print profile for a (85%) smaller version that can be printed on a printer with a 256mm tall build area. And included the mouthpiece.

Let me know if the printed mouthpiece doesn't work for you. I could look into modifying the scaled version to work with a commercial one.
