Background Information

The North American F-100 Super Sabre was a landmark aircraft, developed as a higher-performance successor to the F-86 Sabre. On its maiden flight in 1953, it broke the sound barrier in level flight, a feat no production fighter had achieved before. However, its revolutionary performance came with significant risks; the early service life of the F-100 was plagued by dangerous handling characteristics. Pilots had to contend with issues like inertia coupling—a sudden and uncontrollable yaw and roll—and the violent "Sabre Dance," a tendency to pitch up sharply at high angles of attack. These challenges led to numerous modifications that eventually tamed the aircraft into a capable fighter-bomber.

The F-100 saw extensive combat service, becoming the longest-serving U.S. jet fighter-bomber in the Vietnam War. It initially flew as a MiG escort for F-105s before transitioning to a primary close air support role, delivering ordnance throughout South Vietnam. The two-seat F-100F variant pioneered the dangerous "Wild Weasel" mission, tasked with locating and destroying enemy surface-to-air missile sites. The Super Sabre was also a key export aircraft, serving with NATO allies like France, Denmark, and Turkey, as well as the Republic of China Air Force. For a time, it was even flown by the prestigious USAF Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team. Phased out of USAF service by 1972, the "Hun" remains a legendary symbol of the supersonic jet age.
