The Long March-3B is a three-stage liquid-fueled bundled rocket developed in the late 1990s by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), part of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) It is primarily used for launching heavy satellites into geostationary transfer orbit multiple light satellites with one rocket Beidou navigation satellites and other orbital satellites It is China's main rocket for commercial launch services
The Long March-3B was developed based on the Long March-3A (CZ-3A) and Long March-2E (CZ-2E) rockets using the Long March-3A (CZ-3A) as its core stage and bundling four 2.25-meter-diameter liquid boosters The boosters and their bundling structure are essentially the same as those of the Long March-2E Overall design of the Long March-3B began in July 1989 its first launch failed on February 15, 1996 The second launch was successful on August 20, 1997 This rocket not only effectively increased the high-orbit carrying capacity of the Long March 3 series rockets but also formed a complete series
