Description

Remixed cranium and mandible of an adult female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus, NMNHVZ 7360749, USNM 481803) from the Smithsonian (under cc0 license). This specimen was collected in 1971 from Liberia (cranium--https://3d.si.edu/object/3d/pan-troglodytes-verus-cranium:2e16fefd-829f-4dfc-aa61-edca83f18042). The mandible was listed separately: https://3d.si.edu/object/3d/pan-troglodytes-verus-mandible:1cfd908f-d04d-44d9-a9fc-61f6cec47545.

My changes to the original:

Since this was a microCT model, I removed the internal surfaces and filled holes to make each model solid for 3D printing (see this video).

For printing, 0.16 mm layers turned out the best--0.20 looked pretty rough on the support surfaces but feel free to try it for faster printing. I oriented the cranium so that the nuchal line was not affected by the supports (supports are between the nuchal line and foramen magnum). Use tree supports with top interface spacing = 0 and matte filament to make support removal easier. This will fit on a small printer like the A1 mini in the orientation I have provided. I printed mine in Sunlu matte PLA in bone white.

This individual has great detail and an interesting nasal bone area (at least it looks different to me from some other chimp skulls). The teeth are worn flat and the mandible articulates well with the dentition of the cranium. Great model to add to your reference collection of primates for a bioanth, human evolution, primatology, or paleoanthropology classes or lessons. Compare to the juvenile chimpanzee here.
