Lions of the Gate of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City
Within China's Forbidden City, there are countless uniquely styled furnishings, among which its exquisite bronze lions are particularly striking. A series has been created and is being uploaded successively.
Among the bronze lions in the Forbidden City, the pair in front of the Gate of Supreme Harmony is the largest, with exquisite styling and more ornate decoration, perfectly harmonizing with the grand and imposing Gate of Supreme Harmony; however, they are not gilded and lack a specific style. Based on their appearance and casting, they are presumed to be from the Ming Dynasty.
The bronze lions are vividly shaped, lifelike, and realistic, crouching on stone pedestals with their mouths open and teeth exposed, seemingly roaring fiercely. They have manes on their necks, and bells and tassels hanging below their necks. Their limbs and claws are strong and powerful, indicating a fierce disposition. In each pair of lions, the one on the right is a lioness, extending her left paw to playfully tease a cub. The cub is lying on its back, mouth holding a large claw, fully embodying the warmth of maternal love. On the left is the male lion, extending its right paw, playing with an embroidered ball, which brings to mind the lion dance movements from Chinese legends. All of these fully reflect the wisdom and creative talent of the ancient working people.
