iPod Classic 5th Gen USB-C adapter slide-in Case
Print Profile(1)

Description
This project is a design exercise that encloses a 30-pin-to-USB-C adapter in a printed case for the iPod Classic (5th / 5.5th generation, thin). The goal is a reversible way to add USB-C without soldering or opening the iPod.
This revision is a single-piece slide-in shell: the adapter nests in a pocket and the iPod is retained by the case geometry (side rails and bottom cradle). The USB-C port aligns with the original connector area. The case adds ~1 cm to overall length.
Features
- Design exercise, not a finalized product
- Reversible mod; no soldering, no disassembly, no screws
- Uses inexpensive 30-pin-male → USB-C-female adapter block
- Slide-in retention by shape/friction; optional shim ribs for tighter fit
- Adds ~1 cm to the iPod’s length
Assembly
- Press-fit the 30-pin→USB-C adapter into the internal pocket (USB-C facing the opening).
- Slide the iPod in from the top until it bottoms out and the side rails capture it.
- Plug in a USB-C cable and use as normal.
(Optional) For 6G/7G thin models, add a 0.3–0.6 mm foam/TPU shim or print the ribbed variant for a snug fit.
Print Settings
- Material: PETG or ABS recommended (PLA works)
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
- Infill: 12–20%
- Walls: 2 perimeters
- Orientation: standing up
- Supports: light supports under the setting top lip/port.
Bill of Materials
- 1 × 30-pin male → USB-C female adapter (generic “white block” style)
- (Optional) Thin foam/TPU tape strips for shimming 6G/7G thin
- 1 × 3D-printed slide-in shell
Notes
- Compatibility: Designed for 5G/5.5G 30 GB thin. Works on 6G/7G thin but those are ~0.5 mm slimmer—use shims or a ribbed variant. Not compatible with 6G 160 GB fat.
- This is a proof-of-concept to validate an external, reversible USB-C enclosure.
- Adapter quality varies: many are charge-only; some allow sync—test your unit.
- Personal use only. Commercial use or resale is prohibited.
