Description

Discobolo - Modern Lamp

Introducing the Discobolo - Modern Lamp my contribution to the Greek Mythology Design Contest! This project reimagines the iconic "Discobolus of Myron" (The Discus Thrower) not just as a static sculpture, but as a dynamic and functional piece of modern art. The classic discus is replaced with a light source, illuminating the timeless form in a new way.

The most unique feature is its activation: the entire 384mm tall sculpture is mounted on a spring-loaded base, allowing you to turn the light on and off with a simple, satisfying push down on the Discobolo itself.

Key Features:

  • Modern reinterpretation of the classic Discobolus statue.
  • Unique Push-to-Toggle Switch: The entire statue acts as the power button.
  • Designed specifically for the Bambu Lab LED Lamp Kit 001.
  • Large Statement Piece: Stands at an impressive 384mm tall.
  • Multi-part design for optimized, high-quality printing.

Required Hardware:

  • Bambu Lab LED Lamp Kit 001: This project is designed specifically for this kit, which provides the light, cable, and switch. You will need to source this kit separately.

Printing Recommendations:

This project consists of 4 main file types with different requirements:

  • Upper & Lower Statue Pieces:
    • Material: White or Marble-effect PLA is highly recommended to mimic a classical statue.
    • Layer Height: 0.16mm - 0.20mm for capturing fine sculptural details.
    • Supports: Organic supports are required for best results.
  • Springs (Print 4):
    • Material: PETG or a durable PLA (like PLA+) is recommended for the necessary flexibility and longevity.
    • Infill/Perimeters: Use 3 perimeters and a higher infill (e.g., 100%) for strength.
    • Supports: None needed.
  • Lower Base Piece (Switch Holder):
    • Material: Match the filament used for the main statue pieces.
    • Supports: None needed.

Assembly:

  1. Print all the required parts according to the recommendations.
  2. Carefully remove the organic supports from the Upper and Lower statue pieces.
  3. Assemble the base by inserting the switch from the Bambu LED Kit into the Lower Base Piece.
  4. Firmly snap the 4 printed Springs into their designated slots on the assembled base.
  5. Combine the Upper and Lower statue pieces to form the full Discobolo.
  6. Place the assembled Discobolo statue onto the springs in the base. The switch should align to be pressed when the statue is pushed down.
  7. Snap the Bambu Lab LED light from the kit into the "disk space" in the statue's hand.
  8. Route the cable through the back of the base and plug it in.

The Switch seems to big to push it into place. It took a fair bit of material from switch and base until it went down. Nevertheless a beautiful Piece

this seems strange to me I've adjusted tolerances, as you can see in the gif of the build, have you tried flow compensation for the filament used?

Replying to @Collecticraft :
I strarted the print with the mobile app, so I didn’t even sliced it. That could be the issue. But since the other tolerances for the springs and lid were on point I thought that it could be due to the model.
