The Lumen Passage 💫🪐

A 3D printed kinetic light sculpture with a motorized pendulum and glowing globe that creates mesmerizing reflections.

The Lumen Passage is a 3D printed kinetic light sculpture featuring a motorized pendulum that carries a globe through the glowing center of a monolithic frame. As the globe passes through the LED-lined opening, light scatters and reflects in ever-changing directions — creating a mesmerizing display of motion and illumination.

How It Works

This mechanism works by gear reductions, pulleys and timing belts printed in TPU95A:

Ending Notes

I am NOT a mechanical engineer, so I did a ton of research for this project. But I am sure there are a few design choices that might not be ideal. I welcome the feedback from the community and I'd like to improve upon this project with your help 🤝♥️💪

Future Improvements

For this first version, I wanted to create something that would work for everyone and I was on a deadline to enter the contest. That being said, there are a few areas that I will try to improve in the next version. They are:

  • Add a USB-powered version
  • Use a GT2 Timing Belt instead of TPU 95A (the TPU tends to loose elasticity over time)
  • Smoothen the motion
