Description

This project is a proof of concept for a case that encloses a 30-pin to USB-C adapter for the iPod Classic (5th / 5.5th generation). Wanted to explore a reversible way of adding USB-C without soldering or opening the iPod.

The adapter slots into the print and is held by four M2×4 mm screws. The USB-C port aligns neatly with the iPod’s original connector, the result is a  case that adds extra length but hey usb-c.

Details:

  • Reversible mod, no soldering required
  • Holds a 30-pin to USB-C adapter securely
  • Two-part print, assembled with four M2×4 mm screws
  • Adds about 1 cm to the iPod’s length and 3mm to width and depth

To assemble:

  1. Insert the 30-pin to USB-C adapter into the printed base.
  2. Align so the USB-C port sits flush in the opening.
  3. Attach the lid and secure with four M2×4 mm screws.
  4. Connect a USB-C cable and use as normal.

Print Settings

  • Material: PLA, PETG, or ABS
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Infill: 15–20%, make it as heavy as you want...
  • Supports: Yes (recommended under the port cutouts )

Total Materials

  • 1 × 30-pin male to USB-C female adapter (inexpensive eBay/AliExpress type)
  • 4 × M2×4 mm screws
  • 3D printed base and lid

Notes

  • This is a design exercise intended to test the concept of an external USB-C enclosure for the iPod Classic.
  • Designed for iPod Classic 5th/5.5th generation thin version.
  • The case adds extra bulk. Consider it a proof-of-concept rather than a refinement.
  • Adapter quality varies; many are charge-only, some allow syncing.
