I think you may actually be able to fit this into a single square

Indeed. You have a good eye :D I tried to make it fit inside one square. I rotated it 45 degrees but I needed to remove a bit of the wall corners etc and was afraid it might hit nearby bins, so I chose to instead just make a double one to ensure it would work for everyone :)
