GT-RC Video Presentation:
The Mazda MX-5 NA, introduced in 1989, is the car that revived the classic lightweight roadster formula and went on to become the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car. Known in different markets as the MX-5, Miata, or Eunos Roadster, the NA generation captured the spirit of classic British roadsters like the Lotus Elan but delivered it with Japanese reliability, precision engineering, and everyday usability.
At its heart, the MX-5 NA came with a 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four engine producing 115 horsepower, later joined by a 1.8-liter version in 1993 with up to 130 horsepower, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox (with a 4-speed automatic as an option). With a curb weight of just around 950 kg, the car was never about outright power—it was about balance, agility, and connection to the road. Thanks to its perfect 50:50 weight distribution, rear-wheel drive layout, and double-wishbone suspension on all four corners, the NA offered a driving experience that was pure, playful, and confidence-inspiring.
Design-wise, the NA became instantly iconic for its pop-up headlights, simple flowing lines, and compact proportions. It had the look of a classic sports car but with modern touches, making it timeless even today. The cabin was intentionally minimalistic, focused on the driver with simple analog dials, supportive seats, and a snug, engaging driving position. The soft-top roof was manually operated and could be folded down in seconds, enhancing the open-air experience.
The NA MX-5’s charm wasn’t just in how it looked or drove—it was also in its accessibility. It offered genuine sports-car fun at an affordable price and with rock-solid reliability, making it one of the most beloved driver’s cars in history. Enthusiasts appreciated how easy it was to maintain, modify, and personalize, leading to a massive global community and motorsport presence, from autocross to grassroots racing.
The Mazda MX-5 NA remains a cultural icon and automotive legend, celebrated for reintroducing the joy of lightweight, simple, back-to-basics driving in an era where cars were becoming heavier and more complex. With its playful handling, timeless design, and endless charm, it set the template for all MX-5 generations that followed and secured its place as one of the greatest sports cars of all time.
