In Greek mythology, Athena placed the Gorgoneion (Medusa's severed head) on her shield, the Aegis, after Perseus gave it to her as a gift. The fearsome image of Medusa's head became a powerful protective symbol on armor and shields, known as an apotropaic symbol, believed to ward off evil and inspire terror in enemies
