Description
Adapter Plate for Gardena MD/SD Pop-Up Sprinklers – Protects Against Washouts, Robotic Mowers & Damage
✏️ Short Description
Adapter disc for Gardena pop-up sprinklers (MD40, MD80, MD180 incl. /300 variants and SD models). Prevents washouts, protects robotic mowers and sprinklers, easy tool-free installation.
📖 Detailed Description
I have developed an adapter disc specifically for Gardena pop-up sprinklers of the MD40, MD80, MD180 series (incl. /300 variants and the SD models).
The plate stabilizes the area around the sprinkler, prevents soil washouts, and ensures that your robotic mower can drive over it smoothly and without jolting. At the same time, it protects the sprinkler itself from external influences.
✅ Advantages
- Prevents washouts around the sprinkler
- Creates a level surface for robotic mowers
- Protects sprinkler base & mechanics
- Avoids damage to the sprinkler head
- Tool-free installation – quick and easy
- Perfect fit for all mentioned MD and SD models
🔧 Installation Instructions
Installation is done without additional tools:
- Unscrew the sprinkler head as usual.
- Attach the adapter.
- Then tighten the sprinkler head again.
👉 Done – the adapter is stable and ready for use.
Note: It may be necessary to remove the turf around the sprinkler to the size of the adapter disc so that the plate can lie flat.
⚙️ Print & Material Recommendations
Material Recommendations:
- ABS → robust, UV-resistant, ideal for outdoor use (my own print was done in ABS, without supports, 2 walls, 15% infill).
- ASA → even better weather & UV resistance, especially for sunny locations.
- PETG → good combination of stability and printability, also weather-resistant.
- PLA → possible, but only for sheltered locations (becomes brittle outdoors).
Print Settings (tested):
- No supports needed
- 2 perimeters/walls
- 15% infill (Grid or Gyroid recommended)
- Layer height: 0.2 mm for a clean finish
🌱 Background & Problem Statement
The Gardena MD sprinklers (e.g., MD40 to MD180) are pop-up sprinklers for automatic garden irrigation. They disappear almost completely into the ground when not in use and are adjustable without tools.
A common problem: Over time, the soil around the sprinkler washes out – small hollows or depressions form.
🚜 Problems for the Robotic Mower
- The robot jolts or tilts at depressions, which affects cutting quality.
- It can get stuck or stop unnecessarily.
- Constant driving over edges stresses the drive and mowing mechanism.
- In unfavorable cases, it even gets caught on the sprinkler.
💧 Problems for the Sprinkler
- Washouts cause the sprinkler head to no longer be flush with the lawn surface → a tripping hazard for the robot.
- Repeated impacts from wheels or the mower deck can scratch or damage the plastic of the sprinkler head.
- In the worst case, the lifting mechanism is blocked or the spray head is deformed, which reduces irrigation performance.
- In the long term, expensive replacement or repair work is threatened.
👉 The adapter plate creates a stable, level protective surface that prevents washouts and protects both the robotic mower and the sprinkler. This ensures that the irrigation system and lawn robot remain reliably in use longer – for a healthy lawn without additional costs
