🌊 WaveDial – Mechanical Dimming Table Lamp

This lamp continues the idea of FlameDial, using pure mechanics for dimming.
I know some might say “electronic dimming is more energy efficient” — but as a mechanical guy, this is my way of sticking to what I love.
For this version, I simplified the dimming system to just the iris mechanism (some call it an aperture — honestly, I’m not sure which is correct 😅, so if you know, please comment and teach me!). The lamp kit still has the regular on/off switch, but brightness is controlled by rotating the lampshade itself — and honestly, I think that feels super cool hehe.
When it comes to lampshades, I like minimalist modern design. My mentor always reminded me: “simple is always the most reliable” — especially in mechanics. So I sketched out this cylindrical form with wave patterns. It provides enough lighting while keeping the shape functional, because good design should always exist for use.
💡 A small protest from a mechanical guy
MakerWorld is full of amazing lamp designs — some contest entries hit 100+ likes in just one day, while mine is still stuck in the single digits 😅. That’s when I realized: maybe I’m not the best at making the most beautiful lampshades, but I am pretty good at building this mechanical dimming base.
And here’s my little protest: it feels like MakerWorld loves electronic builds more (especially after Cyberbrick ⚡). But I believe mechanical interaction can be just as fun and beautiful as electronic — maybe even more timeless.
So if you’re a designer, I’d be super excited to see your Remix with this base. Together, we can prove that gears and sliders still deserve the spotlight.
