Description

This box is basicly a different  version of another one i posted recently : https://makerworld.com/en/models/1692274-custom-storage-box-with-magnetic-lid-parametric#profileId-1795348 , but has hinges and still closes with magnets.

In this version you can customize everything from the previous version, plus you have options with 3 of 5 knuckles hinges, also the bolt of the hinges (diameter and lenght of the hinges changes). I wanted a low profile hinge so there is no nut involved, just screw the bolt and is more than enough (other details in the customization files as well).  The 3 knuckles version is better for short hinges like 20mm !

THIS IS THE LEVEL OF CUSTOMIZATION THAT EVERYBODY LOVES I THINK. It might be too much for some people, because i did't keep it simple, but for whoever likes to have absolutely everything customizable in a box, the price you pay is that you have to read all the instructions from my customization panel. Many parameters are limited not to break the model, but some of them have limits that needs your attention to read there all the info how not to break the model.

All the hardware required are 4 magnets and 2 bolts (goes from M2 up to M5 (if by “crazyness” you make a very big bulky box), limited between 20 and 50 mm long bolts. The bolt will never come loose if you keep the hole tight (customizable also from 1.9mm up to 5mm), it makes it's own thread, drive it slowly.  The best recommended is M3x30 or M3x35 for a bit longer box, with a flat head bolt but the head no bigger than 6mm diameter. Model uses just the usable part of the bolt, and doesn't care about the bolt head (the head stays outside the hinge).

Avoid countersink bolts in this design as they are measured with the head together and hinge does not have recess for that.

(if requested, i can add versions that i have, for embeded M3 countersink bolts+nuts, or for embeded M3x 30/35 hex socket cap bolts + nuts. Theese will make the knuckle diameter a bit bigger off course).

If you use M2 bolts for some small boxes and because you want tiny hinges (with the hole 1.9 diam, it should work, but i didn't tested myself as i don't have M2x20 bolts, so leave a comment and inform if that was fine.

This kind of boxes with hinges are more suitable to be bigger, but if you really want a very tiny box with a sliding lid, check this one posted by @yujixun  : https://makerworld.com/en/models/1699192-customizable-sliding-lid-box-parametric-box#profileId-1801785  and customize it in the interior very small.

Please be aware that if you customize this model in MakerWorld and then download it as an STL/3MF  file, the downloaded version might have a lower mesh resolution than the original. Curves may look slightly faceted. This seems to be a MakerWorld issue and more and more people push MW to increase STL size limits, is not related to the model itself.

If you're not happy with your STL/3MF slicer preview after download, i can help you, just PM me with your exact customization and i upload a fine quality STL/3MF in my Google Drive, and give you a link to download it from there, or i add a print profile here.

Thanks for the boost. Glad you like it. You customized for a shorter hinge than the real bolt so you can put a nut?

I stuck with the standard spacing, the screws were some 32mm ones I had on hand.

Maybe it's my fault because i didn't mention in the customization panel about this: " Model uses just the usable part of the bolt, and doesn't care about the bolt head (the head stays outside the hinge).   " It's mentioned only in the main description between lines...

Perfect! Just waiting for delivery of magnets and screws to properly finish it.

The magnet holes seems too small for that size box, i hope you will be happy how that lid will stay in place. If not... just bigger magnets, up to 10mm

I love these boxes! The full configurability is brilliant, as you're not restricted to specific sizes of screws and magnets - you can use whatever you have on hand. Thanks for this great work!

Great and simple box! It being parametric is amazing and it was exactly what I was looking for. Something that uses magnets for closing but hinges otherwise.

Double boosted for perfect hinges! Probably my nicest print yet, slightly modified in PETG Translucent Olive, Brown, Grey and Clear.

Hi, First of all, thank you very much for the complete customization. I have a slightly different requirement. I need a box with 3 compartments with different sizes. Would it be possible to give customization on compartment sizes? Thank you in advance.

Hi, that would be possible. Send me a private message with your exact customization of the box. For the interior compartments though, simply give me the full interior you want and take a sheet of paper and draw your 3 desired compartments sized in mm , keeping in mind the divider thickness you choose, and send me a picture. I'll create/model different walls myself and give you a STEP file.

Thanks Mike, I accidentally sent you half baked message (private one) and I am not able to send any more messages because makerworld says "You cannot send another message until user replies". If you see a recalled message, please reply back with something and I will send you the details. Thanks again.

Is there any way you can add an option for an embedded magnet. One where you pause the print, add the magnet and then print over?

Hi. Because this model has customizable heights, i can't make that as a standard. Also, having the magnet embedded, some forces will be lost. But i can make one for you custom and give you the 3mf file. All you need to do is to write down on a piece of paper every single line of customization that you need from my customization panel, and send me a picture in private message. The holes for magnets in this case should be 0.25mm larger in diameter than your actual magnets (try to go for 10mm magnets to compensate with extra force the plastic that cover them). All the holes will be created 0.5mm deeper than your magnets real depth, i set the pause at the proper layer, you place magnets, and then the print will make extra 0.4 mm on top of them.

I typically use 6x2mm embedded with some good success with enough attraction to keep the bin closed pretty well. will send you some measurements. thank you!
