An apparatus for the creation of a directional magnetic field.
Assembly:
- attach 2 magnets together, repeat 5 times until you have five 6x4 magnets (you could also buy 6x4 magnets which may also work but it's not what I used)
- use a compass (or phone compass) to find the south pole of the magnets
- place the magnets in the 3d printed holder putting the cap on with each one and making sure the south poles face inwards making the magnets repel each other
- test - I used a phone and a magnetic visualizer app to see how strong the device was from different directions with a set distance (See in the pictures) side on was the weakest, then backwards and finally the intended way round was almost 2 times stronger than backwards.
Modifiers note:
I suspect that the apparatus would work much better with stronger magnets and would also work better with longer cylinder magnets (the original patent used these ones: https://supermagneticshop.com/product/sm23-d-16x20-n42-superpot-m4x7/)
So if you experiment around with the file and come up with something better please don't hesitate to contact me. Together we will crowdsource ideas and modifications till we have the best magnetic beam we can have.
Origin story:
It all started about two years ago, me and a few friends were on a bus and some kid was playing a loud annoying game on their phone.
Me and my friends, (being engineering students and extremely petty) immediately started dreaming up revenge fantasies. One friend suggested an EMP and another straightaway piped up with “that will destroy our phones too you idiot” of course I thought of a directional magnetic field, but then the first friend responded with “faraday cage” and that was that.
However I couldn't stop thinking about a directional magnetic field and I did some research on it and eventually ended up doing a full research project on it; that took me to all sorts of interesting places such as monopoles, conical magnets and laser fields.
But then I found a patent by Boyd B. Bushman and I thought that it just might work.
And so here I am a few months and 7 versions later, Incredibly proud to be sharing my work at last and over the moon that it actually works. I never got to a directional EMP but it's in the patent and I know I could do it… And, that's enough. (thanks for reading, I'm impressed you made it all the way through that)
